12 Volumes Plus 1 (see below). 27.5 cm x 20.5 cm, 39 plates after Le Barbier L'aine, but primarily by Jean-Michel Moreau, Le jeune + 11 folding plates of music scores, and 3 folding tables. Frontispiece portrait after Maurice Quentin De La Tour, engraved by Gabriel De Saint-Aubin. All volumes with title-page in red & black and with unique title-page vignette. Pp. xxxii, viii, 382; 399; iv, [5]-373; 354; 485, [2] - contents; [xxviii], 29-484; 516; 419; [x], 538; 8, 558; 515; 704. Cat's paw marbled calf, 5 raised bands with gilt decorated compartments, double leather spine labels, French curl/placard designed marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, a few volumes still have the ribbon bookmark. Periodic browning of pages although sheets still supple. Engravings and folding plates in very good, clean condition. Vol. 7 has one page with repaired horizontal tear, vol. 6 has one page with small closed tear, otherwise interiors are quite good. Covers scuffed and rubbed with spine gilt dulled, also spines have a red hue possibly due to the application of a cleaning solution, the top layer of leather on the rear cover of volume 6 only, has been worn or rubbed down to the suede, this may have been treated at some point in the past with an oil which has stained the last 20 or so leaves. Overall, a very nice, scarce set. Vol. 1-2: Julie, ou la nouvelle Heloise; Vol. 3-4: Emile, ou de l'education; Vol. 5-8: Oeuvres Melees; Vol. 9: Dictionnaire de Musique; Vol. 10-12: Oeuvres Posthumes. Vol. 9 is wrongly dated 1766. Volume 13: "Seconde et Derniere Partie des Confessions de J.J. Rousseau, Citoyen de Geneve. Tome XVI" A Paris: Chez Volland, 1791. The verso of title-page reads: "Ce Tome XVI fait le Tome XIII et dernier de l'Edition connue sous le titre de Londres." Quarto, original paper boards, backed in gilt-stamped calf, three leather spine labels, handwritten paper label to front cover. Bookplate to front pastedown, previous owner name stamp to front free endpaper and at head of title-page. Covers worn and soiled. Although not a match in binding, this volume completes The Confessions, as noted in the French text cited above. Text in French in all volumes.
