Four folding plates depicting the city of Babylon: the hanging gardens at Semiramis, the bridge of Babylon and the palace of Semiramis, an aerial view of the city of Babylon, and the Tower of Babel. Text in Latin and Greek in parallel columns. Bound in contemporary vellum, covers laced through, with old ink title on spine, lacking ties. Minor soiling and staining to binding with some wear to edges, small ink stamp on title, small (nickel-size) dark stain at top of ff. a4, a5, and a6, impairing the legibility of the text, but overall an excellent copy internally, with exceptionally fine plates. The 1618 edition of Herodotus by Paulus Stephanus is the third and last Estienne edition. It follows the first Henr. Stephanus edition, Paris, 1570 (Greek only); the second edition, Paris, 1592 (Greek and Latin, the Latin version being that of Valla, revised and corrected by Stephanus); and another edition published in Frankfort, 1608, by Gottfried Jungermann, which made considerable improvements on Stephanus' work by dividing the books into chapters, amending the life of Herodotus, and including the annotations of Sylburgius, numerous passages from Ctesias, a glossary in Greek, and an appendix regarding the overflowing of the Nile. It is this latter edition from which the present text is reprinted, with the addition of some remarks of Patus, and some emendations of the Latin version of Valla. (Moss). Moss I p. 456.
