Engraved title with vignette, followed by a half-page engraved coat of arms, plus 25 full-page engraved plates (several hand-coloured), 1 folding genealogical table (printed both sides), and several engraved textual illustrations. Bound in contemporary half morocco over marbled boards, elaborately gilt panelled spine between raised bands. Binding a little rubbed at extremities, title with semicircular marginal damp stain and ½" closed tear to outer edge, some offsetting from engraved material, modern bookplate, but overall a very nice copy. The First Edition. "The author of this elegant and erudite work has here, with the pen of a Tacitus, accurately defined, in a most comprehensive manner, the rise and progress of the science of heraldry, from the earliest through the most interesting period of British history, accommodating the study to modern systems."
