The distinguished English historian, Edward Augustus Freeman, produced an enormous body of work chiefly on the Classical and Medieval periods. Among his best known writings are his 6 volume History of the Norman Conquest (1867-1879), William Rufus, 2 vols., (1882), and the unfinished History of Sicily, 4 vols., (1891-1894). Freeman was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford in 1884 in recognition of his contribution to English historical scholarship. "Freeman raised the study of history in England to a higher level than that on which he found it, chiefly by inculcating the importance of a critical use of original authorities, accuracy of statement, and of the recognition of the unity of history." (DNB). The four series of "Historical Essays" (of which three series are offered here) were written between 1871-92. They span the last two decades of his literary career and reflect the breadth of his historical interest and understanding.
