12 volumes. Chromolithographed frontispiece to each volume, plus over 1200 colour plates, black & white illustrations, maps, and textual figures. Bound uniformly in publisher's brick red buckram with white paper spine labels, t.e.g., other edges rough-trimmed, no d/w's. Spines a bit sunned, otherwise a fine set. The first nine volumes by famous French Egyptologist, Gaston Maspero (1846-1916), treat of Egypt and the ancient Near East to the conquest of Alexander the Great. The last three volumes (X, XI, XII) by S. Rappoport deal with the Ptolemaic Period (330 B.C.) down to the present time. A thirteenth volume, "History of Egypt in the Light of Recent Discovery", by King and Hall, published in 1906, two years after the publication of the present set, is not included.
