Two volumes. Pp. xxxvi, 524; vii, [1], 598. With numerous wood-engraved textual illustrations, complete with half-titles. Later full calf, sides embossed with a straight-grain pattern framed by double gilt fillets, with the crest of the Law Society of Upper Canada stamped in gilt in the centre, spines panelled in gilt with contrasting labels, gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Some rubbing to extremities, faint stains to front cover of vol. I, but overall an excellent set. First published in 1834, Roget's study of animal and vegetable physiology was the fifth volume in the Bridgewater Treatises "On the Power, Wisdom and Goodness of God as Manifested in the Creation", a distinguished series of works on natural theology commissioned by the Royal Society between 1833 and 1840. Roget was a prominent English physician and scholar, Fullerian professor of physiology at the Royal Institution (1833-36) and Secretary of the Royal Society (1827-49). He is best known for his "Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases" (1852). Freeman 3224.
