"... it appears [word?] the choice is between Dr. Traill and Dr. Maclagan - Both are clever, active and presentable men - and both liberal and for part of their lives, sufferers for [word?] liberality. ... I am glad the choice is not with me - a rigorous estimate of merit will probably lead me to decide for Traill - while [word?] [Drs.?] and feelings want incline me to Maclagan - [Craigie?, Gunderstein?] is plodding studious man - capable of [bringing?] out an useful book [vertical tear to paper at the fore-edge with a small bit of loss] ... Gregory is a [word?] young man - of some talent but no established reputation and a very energetic Tory - Robertson as [word?], he's another recommendation [many words I can't make out here. I gather he's an extreme Tory and has a connection with the Duke of Argyle] - I do not hesitate to say [word?] the choise is really between Traill and Maclagan. / Ever Faithfullly Yours / F.
