Puck of Pook's Hill

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. Good Plus. / No Jacket. Item #38852

Pp. x, 306, [10] - publ. adverts. dated 20.9.06, with 20 black & white illustrations by H.R. Millar. Original maroon cloth with a gilt embossed "Ganesha" roundel - an elephant head with a lotus in its mouth, a recognizable Kipling "logo" which symbolizes wisdom, foresight, and good luck. Another ancient symbol Kipling used for over 40 years was the swastika, a Hindu good luck symbol. In Sanskrit the word means "fortunate" or "well-being". Once the Nazis had usurped the swastika Kipling ordered that it should no longer adorn his books. Covers lightly rubbed and scuffed, corners bruised, spine ends starting, shaken, rear hinge split revealing the mull, front hinge split between p. x, and title of first story. Tanning to endpapers, else interior clean and bright. A nice copy of the first edition.
