2 vols., each with the signature "Robert D. Cartwright, Queen's College" (1804-1843), to front pastedowns and at head of a preliminary text page. He was the son of Richard Cartwright, businessman, office holder, judge, politician, militia officer, and author (b. 1759 in Albany, N.Y. - d. 1815 in Kingston, Upper Canada). In 1799, it was Richard Cartwright who brought a young Scottish teacher, John Strachan to Upper Canada. Richard's son, Robert, became an Anglican minister, receiving his Theological education at Oxford in the late 1820s. He returned to Kingston, Upper Canada in 1833 where he was a Minister for a number of years, and became the father of Sir Richard John Cartwright. Pp. xvi, 260; [261]-486, [13] - index, [1] - list of plates and errata. 31 steel-engraved plates plus extra engraved title-page in volume 1. Original half calf and marbled boards, covers scuffed and soiled, expertly rebacked to period, 4 gilt-ruled raised bands, new headbands. Some foxing and offsetting throughout, primarily at the plates. Overall, a very good copy.
