The Personal History of David Copperfield

London: Bradbury and Evans, 1850. H.K. Browne ("Phiz"). First Edition. Half Leather. Octavo. Very Good Plus. Item #40289

Rebound in half brown calf with marbled boards, gilt decorated spine compartments with red leather spine label, plain endpapers. First edition, first issue in one volume with date on title pages, all first edition points except on page 132, line 20, "screwed" appears instead of "screamed." Pagination i-xiv, errata with 6 lines as called for, 624, [8]-page publisher's adverts., includes half-title. All plates present including Browne's second "dark plate," 'The River' at page 482, (the first was in "Dombey and Son.") What Browne tried to do with the dark plates was to produce the effect of mezzotinting on an etched plate. A very nice, clean copy, however, the preliminary pages are quite brittle and with minor chipping, some foxing to a few plates only, as usual. One of the "important" titles in the Dickens ouevre. Gimbel A122; Muir p. 94, 96.

Price (CAD): $1,500.00
