The Triumphs of Petrarch

1539. No Binding. Very Good. Item #4122

C. 1539. Complete set of 6 engravings in black on 16th cent. laid paper. Later impressions? Each signed with monogram. Sheet not cut right to the plate mark, leaving small margins of about 5mm. Each with a watermark, one either without, or very hard to see. Corners on reverse with early small paper mounts. Two plates with paper repairs to one corner to mend a short tear. Two plates with a few light brown spots. Good, strong impressions. Overall in good condition. Pencz was a painter and printmaker, along with his two brothers. He is known as one of the Little Masters, producing masterpieces in small formats. The Triumphs was one of his largest works. He was active in Nuremberg and was likely employed by Albrecht Durer. Pencz found inspiration for this work on a trip to Italy in 1539. He was only one of many who produced illustrations based on the 14h century poem as it was a very popular subject among artists of the time. Hollstein 101; Bartsch 121; Landau 120.
