Second edition. Bound in 8s. [170 x 110mm]. Pp. [x], 251. Illustrated engraved title-page signed on the plate "R. Gaywood fecit. 54", and engraved frontispiece of a coat-of-arms, and 7 plates of Creation Robes of the nobility, and 41 text illustrations of heraldic shields. Some irregular pagination, but text is continuous. Early binding of blind-ruled full calf leather. Recently re-backed, very handsome, with gilt leather spine label, blind stamped compartments and the date gilt stamped to the spine foot. Engraved bookplate of William Thomas with the edges torn away as if someone tried to remove it. Early, if not contemporary, ink notes on pastedown, front endpaper with paper repair to the upper right corner, notes on front free endpaper, and in white space beneath frontispiece, paper tanning and with occasional, very light foxing. Originally published in 1655, reprinted several times, "and for many years continued to be the most popular text-book with all who studied heraldry. The plates by R. Gaywood are reduced copies of the whole-length figures in Milles's 'Catalogue of Honour'." - DNB. Vol. 9.; Wing C659.
