First American edition. 4to. xviii, [2], 278pp. [2]. 198 wood-engraved illustrations, many in-text, several half-page and full-page. Half black morocco leather over black cloth boards, decorated compartments in gilt, five raised bands and gilt lettering right on the leather to two compartments. Spine bands, spine ends, and board corners scuffed. All edges gilt. Previous owner's name on blank label to paste-down. Some light thumbing to the margins to a few pages, but overall very clean throughout and the binding tight and square. Scarce work on Japanese art, religion, folklore and society, first published in French. This is the First American edition, translated from the Second French edition by Mrs. Cashel Hoey.
