The Works of Max Beerbohm

London: William Heinemann, 1912. Hardcover. Signed. Very Good / Good. Item #42529

1922-1928. Limited Edition, Signed. 8vo. Limited to 780 sets of which volume 1 is signed by the author and numbered 492. 10 Volumes with dust jackets, (15 x 21 cm.), original cloth, each volume a different colour-sometimes known as the 'Harlequin' edition (per Beerbohm's request, ".their aspect must be of a simple-gay kind, as opposed to the ornate-dismal . let them at any rate be all of different colours, so that hereafter on shelves every one of them should seem not to have lost utterly its own little soul."). Paper spine labels with additional label tipped-in to the rear of each volume, uncut. Armorial bookplate of Canadian literary giant, Robertson Davies. Some volumes ever so slightly faded, such as the blue and purple, the tips of some are slightly bumped. Tanning to the pastedowns and the strip on the free endpapers abutting the pastedown due to the glue used in manufacture. Plain beige dust jackets with spine titles, slightly soiled and dusty with minor edge chipping, spines browned with chips to heads & heels, wrapper of 10th vol. (the purple bound volume- A Variety of Things) missing large piece from spine foot and in two pieces. Unusual to find complete in dust jackets. Publisher's name misspelled in vol. 1. Beerbohm wrote a special preface to vol. 1 and notes to vols 5-7 and 10, and an Epistle dedicatory to Edward Gordon Craig to vol. 8. Volumes 8, 9 & 10, published in 1924 and 1928 are actually First Editions. Overall, a wonderful set in very good, bright condition. [Gallatin & Oliver 1d, 4g, 7d, 151, 10k, 8f, 13f, 22, 27.].
