London: Bernard Quaritch, 1927. Limited Edition. Soft cover. Quarto. Very Good. Item #43060

Two Volumes. Edition limited to about 50 copies. Handwritten in ink and signed on inside front cover: "Made in Great Britain / Copy No. 31 [and 27] / Wm. Muir." Also numbered and signed by Muir at the stamp on the last page. Original grey/blue printed wrappers, yapp fore-edges, brown paper backstrips as issued. From the front cover - SONGS OF INNOCENCE: From the Beaconsfield Original in the British Museum (28 plates); SONGS OF EXPERIENCE: From the Beaconsfield Original in the British Museum (22 plates) with, as an appendix, (four plates from the other British Museum copy.) Also one plate for which no colouring is known. (A Divine Image) which seems to belong to the Songs though not included in them by Blake. All illustrations are hand-coloured and exceptionally bright and clear, printed on hand-made paper watermarked: "Whatman 1927 England [and] hand-made." Pencil signature of M.S. Slocum, Pasadena. Myles Standish Slocum was American royalty on both sides - descended directly from Myles Standish, and on the other side from John Carter Brown and the Slocums of Rhode Island. A very good, clean copy housed in a blue cloth portfolio which inserts into a blue moroccan-backed slipcase with blue cloth sides. Leather scuffed, rubbed and stained, cloth sunned and discoloured around margins, portfolio sunned along outward facing edge, though still sturdy, strong, and secure.
