First edition. Second Thousand. In Italian. 8vo. 288p. Full crushed red morocco with an Arts & Crafts floral leaf pattern with surrounding gilt dots on front board and rear. Spine with five raised bands, with the titles right on the leather in one compartment, other compartments decorated with a squared flower, leaf and dot motif matching the boards. Gilt ruled inner dentelles with matching floral cornerpieces. With marbled endpapers and all edges gilt. The text a little age-toned at the edges, a hint of wear at the head of the front joints and small trace of rubbing to the bands, else a very near fine copy. La Citta Morta is a five act tragedy written by Italian aesthete/decadent, poet, playwright, orator, journalist and soldier Gabrielle d'Annunzio for Sarah Burnhardt. The world premier of the play took play at the Theatre de la Renaissance in Paris in January 1898 in a French translation, with Sarah Bernhardt in the role of Anna. A scarce playscript of a famous 19th century Italian tragedy bound in an exquisite Arts & Crafts binding in the style of Doves Bindery.
