Pp. , 1336, . Folio in 6's. [230 x 375 mm]. In full brown calf , recently re-backed, keeping the early burgundy morocco spine label, but enlarging slightly at all edges to match. The boards with several gouges and scratches, repaired and coloured, board corners also repaired. Hinges internally strengthened. Light foxing to the title-page, light yellowing to some of the margins, occasional spot throughout and pencil notations in the margins of several leaves mostly in the first half of text, occasional small rip or chip out of a leaf corner (see Zj and Rrj), just to margin white space, not touching on text. Overall a very clean and tight copy of this 16th century edition of Plutarch's Lives. This is a later edition, originally published in 1559, by Jacques Amyot. Illustrated with woodcut medallion portraits, 52 in total on 50 leaves (2 leaves with two portraits). This edition also includes a translation of the Life of Hannibal and Scipio by Charles de l'Ecluse.
