London, Ontario: McDermid & Logan, 1886. Hardcover. Very Good. Item #44663
Thick large 4to. (110 mm) text-block. Pagination broken up by section. Bound in full brown leather with raised and gilt decorated boards, both matching, spine of five bands and 6 compartments, with the title right on the leather of 2, with gilt frames and tooling to the other compartments. All edges gilt, hinges strengthened by cloth tape, which is at this point holding the front board from coming off. The leather is scuffed and rubbed, dry in many places and the spine is dry and faded. Hinges are delicate but the book is in one piece and still sturdy. Generally very clean throughout, with only light marks and occasional nicks to some edges, with the usual yellowing to the paper. With over 2000 illustrations in the text, lithographed plates accented in gold, maps, all present, with nothing missing. The records portion at the front has been filled out, the presentation page, births, deaths, marriages, also with valuable genealogical information. A section for photographs is included at the back, unused, all mounts in very good nick. This bible includes over 80 pieces of paper and ephemera that were inserted throughout, many of them notes, death notices and certificates, family information, school prize ribbons from 1913, embroidered napkin and things of that nature. One sweet little item in particular, is a hand-made Christmas card/story book (pictured). All now housed separately in a plastic box.
