First Edition. 4to. Mottled calf binding with re-backed spine and leather dyed to match. Blind tooled floral patterned boarder. Marbled endpapers. Corners lightly worn with some scratches to boards. Small stain to bottom edge. Light foxing. Small tear to lower margin of leaf: Fff along white space, not affecting text, and tear to head of leaf following Ccc. text partially affected. Else a near fine copy. An Irish scholar, Edward O'Reilly sought to preserve the Irish language for future generations, ".by giving facility to the study of our primeval history, and to the learning of a language, venerable for its antiquity, necessary to the philologer of every nation, and dear to every geneine Irishman." [preface]. His Irish-English Dictionary contains more than 20,000 words, more than previously included in other Irish lexicons. Examples of adjectives, verbs, syntax in Gaelic followed by their English meanings are found throughout. Each letter of the alphabet is also introduced with notes by O'Reilly.
