The machine books included in this new publication are a part of the broader Andrews Collection of Civil Engineering. The literature of early engineering takes many forms. As a result, the overall collection includes not only 6,000 printed books but also early manuscripts and an extensive archive of construction photographs, maps, working drawings and engineering instruments. The collection covers the period from the beginning of printing up to the beginning of the 10th century but is particularly rich in 16th-17th- and 18th century printed material. The collection documents the development of engineering in the broadest terms and therefore includes European, Arabian, Asian as well as North and South American Material. A wide range of languages are represented, including Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese and Spanish.
