Green ribbon marker. xvi, [1 errata leaf], [1 blank], 624 pp. Numerous engravings from illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), incl. frontis., extra-illustrated title with vignette, [38] plates, including experimental "dark plate" facing p. 547. Extra-illustrated with twelve engraved portraits of the chief characters by Browne. With half-title. First edition early issue points mentioned by Smith corrected in this edition (3 of 17 issues corrected): p. 324, spelling of Captain corrected (instead of Capatain); p. 336, lines 10 and 11 type is not loose and slanted; p. 431 has the page number. Spine sunned, rubbing to extremities, light wear to corners. Errata leaf (8 lines) and errata slip (12 lines) tipped in after plate list. Tanning to title from old clippings inserted. Other plates very clean, with some minor offsetting from plates to text. Spots of browning from pp. 165-176. Small chip to upper corner of p. 185. Bookplate of Frederick Cowan. Two earlier catalogue entries, one laid down to flyleaf at gutter and one loosely inserted. Very good condition overall. Eckel pp.74-76; Smith 1:8.
