Cloth is cockled to rear board, a few scuffs and spots of light soiling. One leaf Publisher's Catalogue supplement dated February, 1874 laid in. Founded in 1868 as Hampton Agricultural and Industrial School, Hampton was established after the American Civil War to provide education to freedmen. The institution now operates as Hampton University, which houses the Hampton University Museum, the oldest museum of the African diaspora in the United States and the oldest museum in the commonwealth of Virginia. This book contains a substantial number of illustrations of African Americans at the school, and the frontispiece contains a folding plate illustration of the institute.
