Root and Branch. A Seasonal of the Arts. Volume I, Issue 4. Flansham, Bognor: The Pear Tree Press, [1915]. 8vo. Engraved title; pp. 53-66. In original blue card wraps with letterpress front cover, hand-sewn spine. Literary and artistic contributions by H. Monro, Arthur K. Sabin, George Clausen, Reginald Hallward, Edward Eastaway (Edward Thomas), Vivian Locke Ellis, Frederick Carter, and F. M. Hallward. Root and Branch was a fine-press periodical printed by hand at The Pear Tree Press, Flansham, Bognor, under the direction of James Guthrie. The first few issues were produced in the true private-press tradition, carefully hand-set and printed on the press's own handmade paper. This fourth issue, published during the First World War, is notable for including two poems by the war-time poet Edward Thomas, writing under his pseudonym Edward Eastaway: "House and Man", later reprinted in Last Poems (1918), and "Interval", reprinted in Poems (1917). Both appeared here for the first time, marking one of the earliest printed appearances of Thomas's poetry. A couple of light and small water spots to rear cover, corners lightly nicked with a small chip at the spine head, and faint foxing to the blanks. A nice copy of this scarce and significant issue of an important periodical. (See Emeny & Cooper, Edward Thomas 1878-1917: Towards a Complete Checklist of His Publications, p. 72.).
