Shadow and Substance

London: W. Kent & Co. (Late D. Bogue), 86, Fleet Street, and Paternoster Row, 1860. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Item #49555

Octavo (8vo), pp. 232. Complete with thirty hand-coloured lithographic plates, including the frontispiece, by Charles H. Bennett, depicting scenes in which characters cast shadows that reveal their inner nature. Bound in the original green cloth, elaborately decorated in blind with gilt titling to the upper cover and a gilt-lettered and decorated spine; binder's ticket of Burn to the rear paste-down. The interior is clean and well-preserved, the plates bright and crisp with rich colouring, and only light spotting to the title-page. The binding a little worn, with bumped corners and fraying at the spine ends; the cloth is torn along the rear joint, and the front hinge is broken, though the volume remains intact and is held by the rear joint. A delicate but appealing copy, suitable for careful restoration, which can be arranged at cost.

Price (CAD): $600.00
