First edition. Small 4to. pp. xii, 75, with 11 in-text engravings. Eighteenth-century half leather over marbled boards, showing heavy wear to the boards and spine; hinges strained but the boards remain firmly attached. A couple of period ink numbers to the corners of the half-title and an early ink ownership signature at the upper right of the title page. Very light spotting to a few leaves, otherwise clean throughout; a very good copy overall. Ficoroni's work is an early study of the Roman bulla, the protective amulet worn by children. Drawing on archaeological finds from tombs and funerary contexts, especially discoveries near the Via Prenestina, Ficoroni compares examples associated with noble families and freedmen, using them to explore questions of social distinction, childhood customs, and amuletic practice in ancient Rome.
