Designed and illustrated with woodcuts by pupils of Clare Leighton. Notable as William Styron's first appearance in book form, this copy is inscribed by Styron on the front endpaper to Evelyn Phaup, a private collector, correspondent, and patron within literary and printmaking circles, whose collection of Clare Leighton material was later exhibited by the University of Richmond Museums and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
