Los Angeles: Ward Richie Press, 1932. Signed. Good. Item #6545

Single sheet poem. Sheet dimensions [340 x 200mm]. Some darkening to lower edge but overall very good. Signed by author with date in blue ink at the bottom. Full title: The Awful Fate Of An Impenitent: A Moral Reflection by Robert Ernest Cowan. The poem tells the tale of a boy who has stolen and been caught, but lies about his wrongdoings. After he is caught time and again, the boy is hanged as punishment. There is a moral at the end of the poem, warning the reader to think before they steal (misbehave). An illustration at the top of the sheet shows a figured hanged, while a crowd surrounds the noose. Robert Ernest Cowan (1862-1942) was a Toronto-born author and book lover who spent the majority of his life in California. He was most famous for his extensive informative book The Bibliography of California, as well as Forgotten Characters of San Francisco. He was considered an authority on California and its history up until that point, and also worked in many book clubs, libraries, and with booksellers.
