First American edition from the British sheets. 4to., xxiii, 281pp., [1]-Dalziel Brothers device, [2]- publisher's ads for Chatto & Windus. Frontis-piece and 81 illustrations by J. Whistler, F. Walker, John Tenniel, J. D. Watson, W. Small, F. Sandys, G. J. Pinwell, T. Morten, M. J. Lawless, and many others. In the publisher's original purple cloth, the front board and spine decorated and stamped in gilt. Board edges bevelled, all edges gilt, the corners are bumped, front board lower corner with a break in the cloth, bumped spine ends and spine foot frayed. Endpapers clean and the hinges are strong, binding a little fragile and a few gatherings want to come out. The frontispiece is badly creased, but the book is intact and clean throughout. Nice clean copy of this particularly scarce title.
